Alexandre Camacho will be the first to hit the road

Even though the drivers who partake of the Qualifying may choose their departure order, Alexandre Camacho will be the first to hit the road tomorrow. The FIA regional rallies regulations stipulates that notoriety drivers of the International Federation will always have priority in the starting order, so, since in the current edition of Rally Vinho Madeira, the Madeiran is the only one holding that status, it will be him, the winner of the last editions of the Rally, the first to start. Today, nonetheless, the starting order for the special stage Avenida do Mar – CINM will be the reverse of that which will be in place from the second leg.

A new Rally “King”?

There are three drivers who have managed to win Rally Vinho Madeira four times. Américo Nunes was the first competitor to manage such a feat with his triumphs in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1977. In more recent times, there were two competitors to achieve the same goal. Giandomenico Basso came up first in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2013, while Bruno Magalhães came victorious in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. These last two drivers will be at the get go of the 60.th edition of the competition and, in case of victory, they may become the new “King” of the Rally Vinho Madeira.

Six previous winners present in this year’s Rally

The 60.th edition of Rally Vinho Madeira will be attended by six previous winners of the competition. At the start of the organization of Club Sports of Madeira the following drivers shall be present: Alexandre Camacho, winner in 2017 and 2018, José Pedro Fontes, first standing in 2016, Bruno Magalhães, victorious in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015, Giandomenico Basso, winner in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2013, Vítor Sá, the top driver in 2004 and Adruzilo Lopes, first standing in 2001.

These sessions will take place at the same place from the previous editions, between Estrada dos Cardais and ER 224, passing through the surroundings of Santo da Serra. The remote Assistance Park will be positioned at parquet Desportivo de Água de Pena. The program will start with two reconnaissance passages for priority drivers followed by the Qualifying dispute, a session which will determine, by its standings, the order by which the competitors who follow it will decide the starting order for the Rally. After the Qualifying, there will be the Shakedown, open to all competitors enrolled in the competition.

Altered itinerary for the 2019 Rally

This year’s itinerary for Rally Vinho Madeira is introducing some differences to that which was adopted in previous editions. Even though the number of special stages is maintained, some alterations to the route were made, as well as the reintroduction of other stages. In the morning of Friday, the 2.nd of August, the two passages by Campo de Golfe come up longer than they have been in the past. This special stage starts, once more, in the surroundings of Campo de Golfe, but, after descending to Forte de Santo António, it will go up from Lombo das Faias to Portela, and, from there, down in the direction of Referta, close to Porto da Cruz. Friday’s afternoon also comes with alterations. Now, the caravan will dispute Serra d’Água, the reverse of Rosário, and following, from there, to Boaventura, a zone that was reintroduced in the program with a beautiful stage that will take the competitors from there to São Jorge, before disputing Santana. On Saturday the 3.rd of August, and right at the start of the competition’s day, Câmara de Lobos will be driven in reverse to how it was done in previous editions. If Ponta do Sol and Rosário are the same as in the past, Ponta do Pargo is now shorter. This special stage, run at the extreme west of the island, starts once again at the parish that lends it its name, but the competitive route will now end before Achadas da Cruz and not at the surrounding of Santa do Porto Moniz.

Free parking at the Stadium of Madeira

The Organizing Committee of Rally Vinho Madeira and the Board of Directors of the Clube Desportivo Nacional have agreed to open the parking lots of the Stadium of Madeira, free of charge, while the third and fourth special stages, Palheiro Ferreiro 1 and 2, from 10: 12 a.m. to 1:26 p.m., take place. The Palheiro Ferreiro special stage is the longest of Rally Vinho Madeira and, besides the iconic passage by Chão da Lagoa, it includes the famous “jump of Choupana”, in the surrounding streets of the Stadium of Madeira, one of the most spectacular zones of the competition.
