Winning the two drive wheels

Rui Jorge Fernandes will be in the next Rali Vinho da Madeira with the ambition to “win the RC3 group and be the best amongst the two drive wheels. We would also like to be ahead as much as possible even if that means to meddle among some drivers with R5 vehicles. In this competition, there will be more rivalry and we will be watching closely João Silva, whose car is supposed to be from an inferior group, despite the fact that it’s a more recent car, having a similar potential of our Renault Clio R3T.  We did not make any changes in our vehicle but we had been very careful with our physical preparation, as this is a very demanding rally.” The 31 years old driver, Fernandes started this sports in 2008 with a Skoda Fabia TDi. He has been behind the wheel of different vehicles, namely Citroën Saxo, Citroën C2 R2, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. In 2019, he got his current vehicle, a Renault Clio R3T and last year became the Regional Champion of his level. In 2021, he stands out in the grouping of the Rally Championship Coral da Madeira.

Trying to shine

Miguel Correia will be, for the fourth time, in Rali Vinho da Madeira, a competition that he hopes to “perform well, in the region of our sponsor. We will try to get the best standing in the board of the Portugal Rally Championship. This is a rally that demands great physical effort and we will try to have maximum focus from the beginning until the end. In each rally that I race, I am improving my knowledge. Still I am far from the other drivers and that, in a way, limits my standing. Nevertheless, we will try to shine. About to be 30 years old, Miguel Correia gave his first steps in the rallies in 2017, with a Renault Clio R3. In the following year, he kept the same vehicle and was the best of his category in the national championship of such sports. In his motorsport career, he drove a Ford Fiesta R5 and last year used a Skoda Fabia R5. In 2021, the vehicle that he is going to race is a Skoda Fabia Rally 2 Evo and he is the sixth in the CPR, after having been the third in the rally Terras d’ Aboboreira and fifth in Castelo Branco, with a withdraw in the middle of the Vodafore Rali de Portugal.

Rally Facts: the well-known brands

For many years, the machines that win the Rali Vinho da Madeira are part of many young and older fans’ fiction, who locally follow the whole sport and the special stage show of motorsport in particular. A reason to chat and argue, the preference for a certain manufacturer ended up, for many times, being an influence for the purchase of a vehicle to be used in a daily basis. In Rali Vinho da Madeira, the most successful brand is Peugeot, with 10 victories, closely followed by Lancia, with 9. In the lowest place of the podium are the two manufacturers with 6 victories each, a Ford and a Porsche. Right behind is Fiat with 5 victories and Subaru, the best in 4 occasions. 4 manufacturers won twice: Ferrari, Opel, Toyota and Renault, as MG, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, Triumph, NSU, BMW and Citroën only achieved the highest place at the podium once.

Rally facts: the debut of Ford Fiesta Rally3

The next Rali Vinho da Madeira edition will have, driving its first kilometres in the Regional ground and driven by Caetanovich, the Ford Fiesta R3. Rally3 is a group with a new concept and wants to be the formula for young people who have driven until now the Rally 4 front traction, for the vehicles with all wheel traction. This model is the first to be eligible in this group, as it was developed by the Polish branch of M-Sport and had its first competitions in 2021.  Ford Fiesta Rally3 has an engine of 3-cylinder in line with 1.497 cc and debits about 215 horse power to 5.000 rpm and a binary of 400 NM to 3.500 rpm. The transmission is made through a 5-speed gearbox by Sadev and the front and rear differentials have limited slip.  The suspensions are by Reiger and allow three types of adjustment. The breaks are by Alcon and the rims used in tarmac are 17 inches. It has a weight close to 1.210 kg.

Trying to have a great performance

Adruzilo Lopes is back to Rali Vinho da Madeira, “something I always do with great pleasure, as it is no secret that this is my favourite competition in the National Sports calendar. This will be my 18th time here and, due to the fact that I cherish so deeply this competition, I will do everything to reach, at least, 20 times. This year I obviously can’t aspire, unlike the previous years, to win this race, as this time I do not have a winning racing car. Nevertheless, I will have an interesting vehicle, a Fiat Grande Punto R3D, diesel but with a sequential box and great suspension. Behind the wheel of such car, I will commit myself to try to give the best performance to the many friends and fans I have in the Island. And hope to finish the rally quite happy. Adruzilo Lopes is 58 years old and started the rallies in 1988 with a Toyota Corolla GT. Then he drove a Mazda 323 4WD and a Citroën AX but it was mostly as part of the Portuguese Peugeot Team that he shone the most. Behind the wheel of models such as 306 Maxi and 206 WRC, he was the National Champion in 1997, 1998 and 2001. He has been active, as he has been driving very different vehicles and he is, in 2021, the current leader of the Rally of the North Championship.

List of entries: Alexandre Camacho 1, Armindo Araújo 2, Miguel Nunes 3

Paulo Fontes, president of the Organizing Committee of Rali Vinho da Madeira, has published, this afternoon the list of entries for the event that is on the roads since 1959 by the Club Sports da Madeira. Including 50 competitors, the list has high quality, as it included no less than two World Champions of either level or category, a European Vice-Champion, seven National Champions and six Regional Champions in a list that a FIA priority driver is highlighted and nine have FPAK priority.  Adding the first standings and regular drivers of the National and International Championships of Madeira and Azores, the course directed by the clerk Pedro Melvill Araújo will be the stage of a vehicle debut, Renault Clio Rally4, nationally, and the first competing kilometres in the island of the models Subaru S14 WRC, Ford Fiesta Rally3 and Renault Clio Rally5. Rali Vinho da Madeira will be performed between the 5th and 7th August in 16 special stages that cross every municipality of Madeira Island. Below is the list:  aqui

A Calm Rally

In 2021, Gil Freitas decided to bet in a new vehicle, the Subaru S14 WRC, and should debut such car in the Rali Vinho da Madeira. The arrival process had a delay and, in such circumstances, the main goal “can only be to have fun. We will probably race the first kilometres with a car already in competition, as this type of vehicle demands a lot of specific tunings and only a few around the world can do it. Our team still does not know how to do it and we have been struggling to ensure the presence of a skilful technician in the Island. After all this turbulence, we want a calm rally, which can be used as a test and allows us to get to know the car better. Freitas started the rallies quite late, in 2013, and has given his first steps in the sports with Opel Kadett GT/E and Ascona 40. In the following year, he was behind the wheel of a Porsche and, except for the year 2017, when he drove a Citroen DS3 R5, he has been driving the German brand. In 2015, he was the National Champion of the RGT group. RVM will be his first competition in 2021.

Rally facts: Stardom Path

Throughout the years, Rali Vinho da Madeira has been launching to stardom several drivers who brighten the international sport stage. With great international prestige, the competition organized by Club Sports da Madeira registers, for example, the three absolute standings champions. In 1978, was on the Island Ari Vatanen awarded in the World Championship in 1981. In 1983, Massimo Biasion was also in the Island, becoming in 1988 and 1989 World Champion and, in 1986, racing in the competition Carlos Sainz, winner of the WRC in 1990 and 1992. In Madeira, there were at least 25 European champions, namely Adartico Vudafieri, Andrea Navarra, Armin Kremer, Armin Schwarz, Bruno Thiry, Carlo Capone, Cesar Baroni, Dario Cerrato, Enrico Bertone, Erwin Weber, Fabrizio Tabaton, Giandomenico Basso, Henrik Lundgaard, Jan Kopecky, Jean-Claude Andruet, Juho Hanninen, Krzysztof Holowicz, Luca Rossetti, Patrick Snijers, Piero Liatti, Renato Travaglia, Robert Droogmans, Simon Jean-Joseph, Toni Fassina and Yves Loubet.

Rally facts: debut of Renault Clio Rally5

Renault Clio Rally5 will race for its first competition in the Island in Rali Vinho da Madeira. Driven by Ricardo Gonçalves, the brand with a diamond shape logo is a strong bet in the popularity used in the competition. With rally5 using a new performance close to the previous R1, this vehicle has a very controlled cost. Nevertheless, it soon became a great model to compete, as it has different drivers competing for many trophies, in ERC and in many countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland or Spain.  Renault Clio rally5 has the Clio RS line and an engine of four cylinders with 1.330 cc. With a Life Racing electronic system, it can reach 6.500 rpm, using 180-horse power and a binary of 300 Nm. The transmission is made through a sequential 5 gear box from Sadev and a self-blocking deferential type ZF. In tarmac, it uses 16 inches rims and the nonadjustable shock absorbers, by Bos Suspension, control the suspension. The minimum weight is 1,080 kg.

Message from the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture - Eduardo Jesus

The Regional Government supports the achievement of the “Rali Vinho da Madeira”, organized by Club Sports da Madeira, which is the greatest motorsport event performed in Madeira for 6 decades. We have a competition that, besides the strong connection it has with the local people, can be considered a tourist animation centre, as it brings to the Autonomous Region of Madeira not only fans but also the whole commercial and sports engine of drivers and teams involved. The rally, besides the contribution coming from outside the island to the Regional economy, also has the particularity to revival local business spread all over the Island, where the racing cars drive by, as the numbers of fans follow them year after year.  On the other hand, our cooperation for the “Rali Vinho da Madeira” to be back on the roads is justified by the impact it has in the promotion and disclosure of the Madeira Destination, as a result of other important sports events here achieved, that are part of the annual calendar of Tourism Animation of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.  Madeira is a Tourism Destination of recognized quality, with great statement. Being so, we create conditions in order to always have such events, with great mediatic, social and economic impact, allowing to amplify the visibility of the Region through diversified events for different audiences. An acknowledgement is due to the Club Sports Madeira and his whole team involved in the achievement of one more Rali Vinho da Madeira” edition. The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture  Eduardo Jesus

Ahead of the RGT

Once again, Filipe Freitas will race in this Rali Vinho da Madeira edition behind the wheel of a Porsche 991 GT3, with which he is planning to “be ahead of the RGT. Without considering the absolute standings, we will try to race as much to the finishing line as possible and, as we have been achieving in the previous championships, perform for the spectators who will be watching us on the roads. In terms of challenges, if the temperatures keep on rising we might have a problem with overheating of the tires. This will probably be the highest challenge, to manage well the tires.  49 years old, Freitas has debuted in rallies in 1998 with a Citroen AX GTI. In the following year, he chose t be behind the wheel of a Citroen Saxo, a car that made him shine in the single brand competition. He is one of the competitors that has driven a wide range of vehicles and has obtained excellent standings with cars such as Renault Clio RS, Citroen Saxo Kit-Car, Opel Astra Kit-Car, VW Golf Kit-Car or Renault Clio S1600. He won his first absolute standing title in 2013 with a  Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X and was Champion in 2016 with a Porsche 997 GT3. In 2021, he is in the 7th position of the championship, after having been in the 4th in Ribeira Brava and withdrew in Machico.

Official online board in the 2021 RVM edition

This year’s Rali Vinho da Madeira edition will have a new format of the official board competition. Until last year, the competitors, main part interested in the information published, could check such information in a board placed in the Rally Control Centre of the Organization Committee, which has been at the Dr Horário Bento de Gouveia School. This year, the whole information will be in the official board on the website https://ralivm.com/2021/pt Every time there is an update, a text message will be sent, allowing anyone to check the information. This innovation is going to fasten the search for any documentation, making the whole process a lot easier.

Drive as much as possible

João Ferreira faces the next Rali Vinho da Madeira with a new car, Citroen DS3 R3T, “a completely different from the previous vehicle he was racing, which means very different driving skills. Being so, my ambition for this competition will be slightly more cautious than I usually am and I want to drive as much as possible, in order to get to know the car better. Even because my car is a normal R37, without the upgrade of electronic, suspension and breaks of Max’s car and it is very difficult to compete in normal circumstances, with some of my opponents. By the end of the rally, I hope I will be more comfortable with the car.  Ferreira is 49 years old and he started the rallies in 2004 with a Toyota Starlet and from an early age was fighting for the first standings in his category and in the single brand driven with its model. The following year, he switched to the Citroen Saxo, which kept being his vehicle until 2008, always being a great protagonist in his category. In 2009, he got a Citroen C2R2 and won the Eng. Rafael Costa Trophy. Since then, he did not race regularly in the rallies until 2019. In 2020, he returned to the competition with a Citroen C2 and in the previous Marítimo Rally, he debuted the Citroen DS3 R3T.

Rally facts: international debuts

The harsh and demanding roads of the Island in the first Rali Vinho da Madeira editions challenged the drivers with multiple difficulties in order to achieve average speed, impossible at a time when this type of competition was regular and was decided by the minimum penalties. Recently, a very technical asphalt did not reduce the level of success in a competition that also demands perfect knowledge of roads that impose perfect trajectories. Being so, there was an idea that it would almost be impossible for a driver to win his first competition. As a contrast of such idea, nine foreign drivers already won their premier in the competition in Madeira. Such conquests were achieved by the French Jean-Pierre Nicolas, in 1967 with a Renault R8 Gordini, by the Finnish Ari Vatanen, in a Ford Escort RS in 1978, by the Italian Toni Fassina, with the powerful Lancia Stratos em 1979, by the Luxembourgish Ali Kridel, in  1981 behind the wheel of a Ford Escort RS, by the Italian Massimo Biasion, in 1983 with a Lancia Rally 037, by the Finnish Henri Toivonen, in the following year, driving a Porsche 911 SC, by the Spanish Salvador Serviá, in 1985 with a Lancia Rally 037, by the Italian Fabrizio Tabaton, in 1986 with the very insightful Lancia Delta S4, and again in 1992, also by the Italian Andrea Aghini, driving a Lancia Delta Integrale 16V.  In 2021 the Rali Vinho da Madeira will have, as debuts, the Spanish Jan Solans, driving a Citroën C3 Rally2, and Francisco Santana Castro in a less recent Opel Corsa B Kit-Car.

Rally facts: the debut of Ford Fiesta

The next Rali Vinho da Madeira edition will have, for the first time in Madeira, the Ford Fiesta R5 MkII, driven by Rui Pinto. This vehicle was developed by the British M- Sports and introduced in 2019 as an answer to new models in the category, as well as other improvements of the opponents’’ cars. This car is an evolution of the first Ford Fiesta R5, one of the most widespread in its category. In comparison to such vehicle, it presents a new coachbuilder, balanced with a new design of the car, a redesigned engine, a new gearbox and new aluminium shock absorbers that allow a considerable advantage in the weight of the vehicle. Ford fiesta has a 4-cylinder engine with about 1600 cc and gifted with a turbocharger with restrictor of 32 mm. It debits a little less than 475 Nm in 4.000 rpm. The transmission is made through a 5-speed gearbox of the French Sadev. The suspension is by Reiger and the breaks are by Brembo. It has a weight close to 1.230 kg.
