Clerk of the Course - Pedro Melvill Araújo

Greetings RVM 2021
The first weekend of August is almost here. It brings us the tradition of having the Rali Vinho da Madeira which is, undoubtedly, the greatest social and sports event of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and is also a competition of firm credits, one of the stars that shine the most in the universe of European Rallies, as well as in the national and regional perspective. It has been a competition of reference for many decades, including, as you might expect, drivers from different European countries, this year limited due to the restrictions imposed by the Health Authorities to the circulation of people, drivers who compete in the Portuguese Rally Championship and the Madeira Coral Rally Championship, in a competition that usually attracts thousands and thousands of local people, this year with restrictions due to the sanitarian control situation, imperative to the control of the epidemic that has been ravaging the world. Our spectators have always been a great example in their civic behaviour and diligent in their support to the drivers and to the Rally Organization and it is, after all, for them that we work too, because if without drivers, there is no rally, without audience there is no show. Once again, we will not have the Avenida do Mar special stage show, as a result of the circumstances previously mentioned of sanitary control, but we will have, on Thursday’s afternoon, a Ceremony of the Competitors’ Presentation, at the podium placed in Praça do Povo. In the following two days, they will drive through the four corners of our Island, crossing every Municipality of Madeira, reassuring the performance and festivity, a controlled gathering with all norms set by the regional, national and international Health Authorities.  As usual, I recommend everyone to watch the rally close to the emotion but far from the danger, as I ask local people to have, as they always do, an exemplary behaviour in order to brighten this completion that is not just Madeiran, it is also from Madeira. An enormous thank you to everyone! Have a great Rali Vinho da Madeira 2021, Pedro Melvill de Araújo

Miguel Nunes is the winner of the 61. st edition of the Rally Vinho da Madeira

Miguel Nunes won the 61. st edition of the Rally Vinho da Madeira, a competition he lead from the first to the last of the sixteen Special Stages of which it consisted. The Skoda Fabia R5 Evo driver won half the Stages, five of which in Leg 1, of which he came out holding a relevant advantage he had to manage untill the end. His biggest opponent throughout the event was Pedro Paixão. Nonetheless, the top gear Skoda Fabia R5 driver, and winner of three Special Stages, felt some difficulties with his vehicle's engine and retired at the start of the last section of the program. Such misfortune opened the way to Alexandre Camacho, winner of the last three editions of the event, to ascend to second place after a competition in which he continuesly negotiated his relationship with his Citroën C3 R5, and of which he only won one Special Stage. With similar difficulties with his Citroën C3 R5, deepened by a more accute unfamiliarity with the terrain, the Spaniard José Marís López has completed the podium after a race performed in a crescendo and in which he even was the best in two Special Stages. Bruno Magalhães, in a Hyundai i20 R5, also imposed his name once, in the list of the fastest and became fourth after a race focused on the Portuguese Rally Championship, a competition in which he obtained his best score. Right behind him, João Silva took some time to find his competitive rhythm and to discover his Skoda Fabia R5's potential, up to the moment he managed to perform consistently with the fastest drivers. Between the sixth and the nineth place were some of the usual exciting characters of the national championship, with José Pedro Fontes (Citroën C3 R5) besting Armindo Araújo and Ricardo Teodósio (Skoda Fabia R5Evo) and also Pedro Meireles (VW Polo GTi R5). Closing the top 10, Filipe Freitas took his Porsche 991GT3 to fourth place in regional terms and to a tryumph in his group, the RGT. Vítor Sá, 14. th in a Citroën DS3 R3T, bested Rui Jorge Fernandes, 15. th in a Renault Clio R3T, after a duel that happened between Special Stages 1 through 16, for both a victory in the RC3 group and for the first place amongst those in two wheel driving cars.

Paixão retires and López goes to the podium

Two Special Stages before the final of the Rally Vinho da Madeira, Miguel Nunes holdson to the leadership in a phase consisting of managing his lead. The podium provisional composition suffered a sudden change when Pedro Paixão, following some problems with his engine, retired at the start of the Special Stage 13. What was a distress to Paixão, became the opportunity for Alexandre Camacho to ascend to second place, pacing at a very strong rhythm, and also to "Pepe" López, the best in Câmara de Lobos 2, now predicted third. Thinking only about the results in the Portuguese Rally Championship, Bruno Magalhães is now fourth, but has tracing at his heels João Silva, who has been listed amongst the fastest and who signed the best timing in his second passage by Ponta do Sol. Now close to sixth, José Pedro Fontes and Armindo Araújo keep interchanging, between advances and retreats, the difference between them. The retirement of Pedro Paixão also allowed for the passage of Filipe Freitas to the restrict group of the top ten, he who is still the best amongst RGT drivers.
