Message from the Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture for the 2022 edition of the RVM

The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, keeps supporting the Club Sports da Madeira (CSM) in the organization of the “Rali Vinho da Madeira”. This year, and due to the fact that this rally will go back to its original form, before the Covid-19 pandemic, led us to fulfil the investment made by CSM with the increase of the public share. Such support goes beyond the competition itself, as it is a privileged channel of communication in Madeira, extremely important for the disclosure of the Region as Tourism Destination with recognized quality, with events throughout the year.  Being so, it is an important contribution to amplify its visibility through a diversified and embracing offer to different audiences, as it allows local people from Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island to live it. Furthermore, the main competition of the Madeiran motorsports reveals, in each edition, in a moment of economic revival of the Region, with the whole island’s involvement, which, naturally, matches one of the main goals of a public share. I also highlight the fact that the Regional Government recognizes the importance of the 2022 competition as part of the  FIA European Rally Trophy – Iberian Area (Spain and Portugal), the Portuguese Rallies and Karting Championship (FPAK) as well as the  “Coral” da Madeira Rally Championship. An acknowledgement to the contribution of the Club Sports da Madeira in the sports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, throughout the years, concerning “Rali Vinho da Madeira”, as I send a word of gratitude and acknowledgement to the Clerk of the Course and its Organizing Committee that, year after year, with the same determination and commitment, takes to the roads such special event! The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture Eduardo Jesus

Message from the President of the Regional Government for the 2022 edition of RVM

Rali Vinho Madeira is back to its normality, with the return of several special stages that the Covid 19 pandemic did not allow to be taken, with its norms completely understood and followed by the organization and the population. After two years, with the recovery that we can witness all around the Region, rally is here with all its splendour, in its 63rd edition, placing, throughout the roads, millions of people who, I am certain, will, once more, give the example of civic sense and follow the rules and safety road signs. In fact, I would like to thank all locals how they have been cooperating in these last few years of pandemic crisis, with a behaviour worth the best references, which allowed the Region to face the pandemic crisis, recover economy and regain its normality, as well as in the different activities, where the Rali Vinho da madeira is set, with its usual 17 stages, highlighting the return of the always outstanding Special Stage in Avenida do Mar. Rally is, for local people, a lot more than a sports event. It is also a social gathering, with their massive, though civic, presence in our mountains, which are filled with visitors, some of them camping, so that they won’t miss a “pinch” of the race. Throughout the years, we all got used to see in the Madeiran roads the greatest drivers of the national, and even international, motorsports. Drivers that we all got used to idolize and bring, without any doubts, a greater bright to our “Tour”. For me, these are the great references, the great heroes of Rali Vinho da Madeira are the Madeiran drivers. They are the ones who have always been racing this competition, making it with high quality and accomplishing it, throughout the days, with great competitiveness. Being so, they have achieved several victories in a competition that is, for many, as well as for me, one of the best rallies of the world. Nevertheless, a rally is not made of those who are in the front line, nor is its history. It is accomplished thanks to many who, for the love they feel for sports, become a part of it, magnifying the competition and showing, once more to everyone, how persistent, determined and passionate the Madeiran People can be. The Regional Government will continue to support this competition. The Madeirans, the Organizational Committee of the competition, led by Paulo Fontes, are worth it. Wishing you all a good rally.

Press release

Considering the fact that the International Automobile Federation (FIA), has not yet approved the specific regulations of Rali Vinho da Madeira 2022, its Organizing Committee, authorized by the board of the Portuguese Federation of Automobile and Karting, has decided to publish a draft of such regulation for everyone interested in it, particularly for the competing teams, so that they can organize all the logistics to be part of the Rali Vinho Madeira, 2022 edition.

Road changes in Funchal during the RVM competition

Funchal’ s City Hall has already approved the Nitice with the road changes in Funchal during the days of the Rali Vinho da Madeira. Bruno Pereira, councilman responsible for the traffic division, explained in detail the different changes for each moment of the competition, as we can see in the following images. José Paulo Fontes, President of the Organizing Committee of Rali Vinho da Madeira, in advance apologised the population for any issues while getting access and driving in Funchal, although highlighting that “such changes are due to an extraordinary international event that promotes Madeira, but, and above all, it’s an event that many Madeiran live intensely”. This year’s centralized edition of RVM in Funchal was a challenge given to Club Sports da Madeira by Pedro Calado, the City Hall’s Mayor, who recalls that the priority “was to bring together the interests of everyone: sports, economic, as well as social, as no one will be left behind”. There was the concern of the City Hall to avoid the closure of the roads for a long period of time, as the only road closed during such days will be Avenida Sá Carneiro, with alternative roads on each East and West areas.  Pedro Calado states that “the road changes will not influence the regular traffic”.

A list to ensure the projection of Madeira in the markets where motorsports are strong

During the meeting with the Madeiran press, José Paulo Fontes has considered that the list of drivers, today revealed, has, as its main market target, countries such as Spain, Italy and France, besides ensuring the traditional strong presence of drivers from the mainland, which matches the interests for the promotion of Madeira abroad. Such strategy, in the current limitations situation, aims to bring to Madeira young talented drivers with their competitive vehicles, some already on the list today revealed. A rally that allows the fans of motorsports a lot of competition in every class, is the main goal of the responsible for the Organizing Committee of the 2022 edition of the Rali Vinho da Madeira.   Club 100 à Hora has not been very sympathetic   José Paulo Fontes has shown his unpleasantness with the behaviour of the “100 à hora”, the club organizing the Rally in Faial next weekend, as it was due to the organization of Club Sports da Madeira that the drivers and their vehicles from the mainland were brought to Madeira. A decision made for the Madeira motorsports, not the “100 à hora”, a club that has kept an uncompromising relation with the Club Sports da Madeira, regretted José Paulo Fontes.    Madeira, through Club Sports da Madeira, has been able to adjuct to new challenges Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture, considers that, within the possible current epidemic situation, the so called “Super Special Stage” of the Madeiran motorsports, is still “the best of what has been done internationally, as there is no doubt that Rali Vinho da Madeira is still the preference of the best drivers who compete nowadays”, underlined. Once again, and as his main aim for this event, the Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture has greeted Club Sports da Madeira for his bright decision of inviting drivers from markets that are today strategic for our region.  For Eduardo Jesus, RVM is still a great example of the best that has been abroad in the motorsports, which means a lot to the Madeirans.

Bernardo Sousa in Rali Vinho da Madeira

Bernardo Sousa will race the next edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira with a Citroën C3 Rally2. The Madeiran driver is back to the competition organized by Club Sports da Madeira, sponsored by TVI and Sports & You, being motivated after the victory of the competition disputed before the event that will hit the roads between the 4th and 6th August. Bernardo Sousa, 35 years old, started the rallies in 2005, behind the wheel of a Ford Escort, after a karting experience. After that, drove a Peugeot 206 S1600 and a Skoda Fabia TDi, before driving the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, which gave him his first victory in the Rali Porto Santo Line, 2007. He took part of many WRC competitions and was a National Champion in 2010, behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta S2000.

58 entries in Rali Vinho da Madeira

58 competitors have formalized their enrolment during the discount period, for the next edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira. Nevertheless, the deadline for the entries for the organization of Club Sports da Madeira will close in a week, on the 18th July, and teams may still be willing to take part of this competition. In the list already assured by the team led by José Paulo Fontes, we can highlight the Italian Simone Campedelli, in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, and the Spanish Alejandro Cachon and Emma Falcon, both behind the wheel of a Citroën C3 Rally2. Campedelli is an ERC driver and was the Junior Champion of his own country in 2011 and also won the Transalpine awards in gravel and tarmac.  Cachon, a 23 years old driver, is one of the brightest competitors of Spain and has stood out until now for his conquest of Junior awards and victory in the Peugeot Rally Iberian Cup in 2021. Falcon, 31 years old, has been remarkable in the feminine competition and was even the European Champion in 2018. In the competition, led by Pedro Melvill Araújo, the main competitors of the Portugal Rallies Championship, namely Armindo Araújo, Bruno Magalhães, José Pedro Fontes, Miguel Correia, Paulo Caldeira, Paulo Meireles, Paulo Neto, Pedro Almeida, Pedro Meireles and Ricardo Teodósio, will be here too. From Azores, will race José Paula, a driver interested in the dispute for the FIA ERT Iberian Rally Trophy, where the Madeiran competition is included. The main drivers from Madeira are also in the list, highlighting the number of vehicles Rally2, Vulgo R5, 20, as well as the Porsche RGT models of many cars from many classes, creating a lot of competition throughout the whole caravan.

Rali Vinho da Madeira´s prestige allows it to face new challenges

The 63rd edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira, which sets the return to normality of the organization led by Club Sports da Madeira. José Paulo Fontes, president of the Organizing Committee, highlighted the “prestige of the competition, which allows it to face new challenges, namely the return of the European Championship, although it all depends on the financial cooperation. The rally, today part of Iberian Rally Trophy in FIA, continues to be a promotional vehicle and an important window display for the brands that sponsor it”.  This next Rali Vinho da Madeira will be competed in 17 Special Stages between the 4th and the 6th of August. In the first day of the competition, the Qualifying and Shakedown will take place, as well as the Super Special Stage, the highly applauded Avenida do Mar, that is back on the program.  The starting ceremony will be in Praça do Povo, where the award ceremony will also take place. On Friday, 5th august, there will be a double round in Campo de Golfe, with a changed route, and Palheiro Ferreiro, which, once again, includes the emblematic Chão da Lagoa. In the afternoon, there will be a double passage through Boaventura, now going to the centre of Arco de São Jorge and the city of Santana, which has no changes. The sections will once again be intermediated by the assistance park, again in Avenida Sá Carneiro. On Saturday, the last day of the competition, the drivers will race in two occasions the Special Stages in Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, Ponta do Pargo and Rosário. The starting parks and park fermé will be set in Largo do Município, in Funchal, within the goal of focusing the rally in the centre of the city. Furthermore, the operational centre is back to Avenida Arriaga, now in the building of the Professional School Atlantico.

José Paulo Fontes highlighted the moment we live in, in which we are considering the future of rallies, namely the European Championship and the World Championship. Being so, it is crucial to place Rali Vinho da Madeira in the international rallies. “The image and the prestige of the competition remains, which makes us in the front line, to soon be back to the highest level of the European motorsport." Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary of the Tourism and Culture, attended the signing of the protocol and stated that “the fact that we have the rally back to its original form, forces the balance between the financial cooperation and the huge effort made by the Club Sports da Madeira”. To Eduardo Jesus “this is not just a simple financial cooperation to a sport, motorsport is a good communication channel of Madeira, being essential to the dissemination of the Region as a Tourist Destination, as well as for its economic development”.
