It's all new

Alexandre Camacho will debut a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 at Rali Vinho da Madeira. The defending regional champion will also have a new navigator, the experienced Carlos Magalhães. The driver had ‘a very positive first contact with the car. I think we're working in the right direction to get a good base and a good job. We're going to have one more test and we'll have to make it competitive, so that we can fight for the top spots. Even though it's only for one race, everything about this project is new. The Toyota is very different from the car I used to drive and which I already knew very well. However, we're going to maintain our usual dedication and commitment. The car seems quite good to me, with a good chassis, but it will be quite demanding to adapt to the 3-cylinder engine, which also has a different mode of use. Let's see if we can get it ready for Madeira’. Camacho is 44 years old and his first rally was in 2001 with a Toyota Yaris. He won the FIA European Rally Trophy in 2018 and has been regional champion seven times, in 2008 and 2009 with a Peugeot 207 S2000, 2015 in a Porsche 997 GT3, 2017 in a Peugeot 208 T16, 2018 and 2019 at the wheel of a Skoda Fabia R5 and in 2023 using a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. With six wins, he is the record holder for victories in Rali Vinho da Madeira.

Rally's Special Stages: SS 11/15 – Rosário

It crosses the island on the imaginary line between São Vicente and Ribeira Brava from Rosário to Serra d'Água, passing through Encumeada. It requires a lot of driving on the climb up to Encumeada and then great temerity on the vertiginous descent to the finish. It's one of the special stages that attracts the most spectators at the Rally. Access: With no alternative access roads, it requires travelling to the start and finish in good time.

How is the Portuguese Rally Championship going?

The Portuguese Rally Championship has not undergone any major changes for 2024 and the calendar consists of the same eight events that defined it last year, divided into two stages, each with four events, both on dirt and tarmac. The season started almost at the end of February with the Serras e Fafe Rally, Felgueiras, Boticas and Cabeceiras de Basto, now out of the ERC. Kris Meeke, again in the Korean brand's Hyundai i20N Rally 2, won, followed by Armindo Araújo and Rúben Rodrigues, both in Skoda Fabia RS Rally2. The competition returned to the road in mid-March for the Casinos do Algarve Rally. In the south of the country, the top two finishers were the same, but the lowest place on the podium was the ‘home driver’, national champion Ricardo Teodósio, in Hyundai Portugal's other i20N Rally2. At the end of April, the Terras d'Aboboreira Rally took place, the other Portuguese event that is also part of the FIA European Rally Trophy. Several foreign competitors took the opportunity to practise for the next round of the WRC, which took place in Portugal. Absolute victory went to Kris Meeke, followed by Frenchmen Pierre-Louis Loubet and Yohan Rossel in Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 and Citroën C3 Rally2, respectively. When it came to the podium for the CPR, Meeke took the top spot and was accompanied by Armino Araújo and Pedro Almeida in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. At the beginning of May, the WRC visited Portugal for the Vodafone Rally de Portugal. In the standings extrapolated to the national championship, Kris Meeke once again came out on top, while Armindo Araújo was in the lowest position. Between them was José Pedro Fontes in a Citroën C3 Rally2. Towards the end of June, the CPR entered its asphalt phase with the Castelo Branco Rally. Meeke once again took the lead, but a problem with his car meant he fell to 6th place. Armindo Araújo won, followed by José P. Fontes and the Spaniard Roberto Blach. Fontes and Spaniard Roberto Blach. For the CPR, third place points were awarded to João Barros in a VW Polo GTi R5. Classification: 1st Kris Meeke, 122; 2nd Armindo Araújo, 111; 3rd José P. Fontes, 60; 4th Pedro Almeida, 44; 5th Ernesto Cunha and Ricardo Teodósio, 43; 7th Paulo Neto, 38; 8th Lucas Simões, 32; 9th Ricardo Filipe, 26; 10th Rúben Rodrigues, 18; 11th João Barros, 17; 12th Gonçalo Henriques, 15; 13th Pedro Meireles and Hugo Lopes, 12; 15th Anton Korzun, 7. 35 drivers have qualified.

Repeat the victory back in 2020

Miguel Nunes starts Rali Vinho da Madeira with his usual Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo and hopes for ‘a good result, driving well from start to finish, if possible repeating the feat of 2020, which is victory. However, we are aware of the strong competition, with many drivers capable of getting there. The balance of 2024 is, for now, bittersweet because we achieved our goals in the first two races but the third didn't go so well for us. The fourth was a little better and allowed us to gain pace and confidence for Rali Vinho da Madeira. It's difficult to have a defined strategy for this event because the weather conditions can affect the results and the way we approach the competition. We're prepared’. Miguel Nunes is 43 years old and made his rallying debut in 2005 with a Citroën C2. He took podiums in 2007 and 2008 with a Peugeot 206 S1600 and won his first rally victory in Calheta in 2010. He was regional champion on six occasions, in 2010 with a Peugeot 207 S2000, in 2012 and 2014 in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X and 2020, 2021 and 2022 in the current Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. He won Rali Vinho da Madeira in 2020.

Rally's Special Stages: SS 10/14 – Calheta

New for 2023, this is one of the most demanding Special Stages of the rally. As it has areas that are very similar to each other, it requires very good reconnaissance work with precise and reliable pace notes. It's also very demanding for navigators. It starts on the descent from Paúl da Serra to Prazeres, where it turns west along the ER 222 to Ponta do Pargo. The weather conditions may be different from the rest of the day's Special Stages and the surface is usually damp on the first pass. The route is very tight and fast. Access: Via VE 3: Prazeres, Maloeira, Raposeira, access to the Motocross Track and Lombada dos Marinheiros.

Competitors did the reconnaissance of Cidade do Funchal

The teams competing in the 65th edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira have been doing the reconnaissance of Cidade do Funchal Special Stage of the three-day event organised by Club Sports da Madeira. Cidade do Funchal, a special event attended by tens of thousands of spectators, runs for 2.18 kilometres through the centre of the town that gives it its name and which has also hosted the event since 1959.

Motorsport Sustainability Forum in Funchal

On the occasion of Rali Vinho da Madeira, the sixth event in the Portuguese Rally Championship, the FPAK, in partnership with the FIA and Rali Vinho da Madeira, is organising a Forum on Environmental Sustainability in Motor Sport. The initiative will take place next Wednesday, 31 July at 4.30pm in the Colégio dos Jesuítas building in Funchal, where the Rectory of the University of Funchal is located. The event's programme includes speeches by various personalities linked to motorsport and, above all, environmental issues: Pedro Barros Pereira, member of the FPAK Board and responsible for Environmental Sustainability, Bárbara Silva, FIA Sustainability Director, José Paulo Fontes, President of the RVM Organising Committee, Cora Teixeira, Director of Tourism Qualification Services, representing the Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, Nelson Correia and Fernando Mascôto Spínola, FPAK Environmental Delegates, Juan Santos, Environmental Commissioner, José Pedro Fontes, Armindo Araújo and João Silva, Rally Drivers, Pedro Melvill Araújo, FPAK Board Member and Clerk of the Course of Rali Vinho da Madeira, Hélder Spínola from the University of Madeira and António Filipe, Director of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, representing the Regional Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment and Elsa Fernandes, Vice Rector representing the Rector of the University of Madeira. This Forum on Environmental Sustainability in Motorsport aims to debate social responsibility and the commitment of motorsport to the pursuit of best environmental practices.

Teams go all out in private tests

Rali Vinho da Madeira is a race with unique characteristics and this condition usually forces competitors into private test sessions in order to find the best settings for the island's tarmac in advance. This way, the entry into the competition on Thursday can already be made with the maximum exploitation of the vehicles' potential. Yesterday, 28 July, the Befast team was in the mountains of Ribeira Brava, and today it was Pedro Meireles' turn to drive in the Galeão area of São Roque. There are many similar sessions scheduled for the next few days by the most varied teams.

Rally's Special Stages: SS 9/13 – Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol starts at Vale and Cova do Pico Estates and progresses through very fast areas with a few hairpins in between, all the way to Carvalhal, traditionally a spectacle area in the streets neighbouring the municipal stadium. From there, and since last year, the stage starts to climb up to Paúl da Serra. This stretch is characterised by very fast areas, interspersed with some hairpins and others requiring a lot of attention, until you reach the beautiful plateau. Access From Ponta do Sol: via Cam. Lombo do Meio, via est. Eng. Ribeiro de Sousa and ER 222

Sportity makes information available for Rali Vinho da Madeira

All the documentation contained in the Official Car of the 65th Rali Vinho da Madeira is once again available on the race's official website, www.ralivm.com, and on the Sportity app. This application is free and available on both the App Store and Google play. Once the application has been installed on mobile device, users must subscribe to the channel organised by Club Sports da Madeira using the password rvmadeira24.

The main goal is victory

João Silva, driving a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, is looking ahead to Rali Vinho da Madeira with the aim of ‘fighting for victory. However, I'm aware of the enormous difficulty and demands this will entail. The pace will have to be very strong, but we mustn't make any mistakes either, as this race counts towards the championship. The season has exceeded expectations because our goal was to adapt to the new car and we've managed to fight for wins. We're the leaders, but our lead is short and everything is still open. In this edition of the rally, anyone who wants to be on the podium has to go as fast as possible. Last year we saw that the paces of the main competitors were very close. I think that this year the drivers from abroad will be able to break what has been, for almost a decade, the dominance of the Madeiran teams. This should be one of the best editions of the event’. João Silva is 36 years old and did his first rally in 2007 with a Toyota Yaris. With a Renault Clio R3, he was Madeira's junior champion in 2009 and 2011. That same year, he was national two-wheel drive champion. In this field and with a Peugeot 208 Rally4, he was regional champion in 2023. He won his first overall rally in 2017, in Calheta, at the wheel of a Citroën DS3 R5. He took part in the WRC Academy in 2012 in a Ford Fiesta R2. He is the leader of the 2024 regional championship.

PSP security operation involves 800 personnel

The details of the security operation set up for Rali Vinho da Madeira were finalised today. The meeting, which took place at the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police, brought together those responsible for the security of the RVM and members of the PSP in charge of the operation that will take place during the week of the rally and which involves around 800 members of this security force, including agents, chiefs and officers. Commissioner José Fernandes has some recommendations for the public attending the event: - Respect road access and closure times; - Respect the instructions of the organisers and PSP officers; - Do not go into prohibited or dangerous areas; - Avoid excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages; - Pay attention to the opening of the section, which only takes place after the organisation and the Public Security Police have given the go-ahead, and not when the ‘sweeper Car’ passes; - Park in appropriate places so as not to hinder the free flow of traffic on the secondary roads to the special stages. The PSP will be on the lookout for illegal races, speeding and drifting at this time, monitoring and taking action to deal with such behaviour.

How is the Madeira Coral Rally Championship going?

This year's Madeira Rally Championship broadly kept the same rules as the previous edition and a calendar with seven events between March and November. The season started in Machico and there Miguel Nunes, again teaming up with João Paulo in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, collected maximum points. João Silva, now with Luis Rodrigues also in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, was second but fastest in 3 of the 9 stages. Miguel Caires, always with João M. Sousa in the same car as his rivals, took the lowest place on the podium. The competition returned to the road in Calheta in mid-April. In the west, Nunes won again, but was unable to pick up maximum points as João Silva, second, also picked up the victory bonus on the last timed section. Miguel Caires joined them on the podium. A turnaround in the championship followed at the beginning of May in São Vicente. In the north, Silva took the lead and Nunes, who was following in his wake, hit a bump and dropped out. With his first win of the year and a podium shared with Miguel Caires and José Camacho, the driver of the FX Skoda now leads the championship. In the middle of July, the excitement went to Ribeira Brava. Silva got his win of the year but only gained two points on his biggest rival, as Nunes got four of the bonus points for speed in the special test. With these results, João Silva leads the FPAK competition with a 14-point advantage over Miguel Nunes. Miguel Caires is third, having always been on the podium and having also been the fastest in the timed sections on six occasions. In the competition for users of two-wheel drive vehicles, Vasco Silva has always won, having returned to the competition with Tiago Fernandes in a Renault Clio Rally4, but in Ribeira Brava he was behind the wheel of a Peugeot 208 Rally4. His closest rival has been Rui Jorge Fernandes, with João P. Freitas, also in a Renault, who should have won in the last event but punctured in the final kilometres. Artur Quintal, in a Peugeot 208 Rally4, is third. Ivo Sardinha, navigated by Marco Leça in a Peugeot 208 R2, continues to lead the Eng Rafael Costa Trophy. Classification: 1st João Silva, 97; 2nd Miguel Nunes, 83; 3rd Miguel Caires, 71; 4th Vasco Silva, 48; 5th José Camacho, 41; 6th Rui Pinto, 40; 7th Rui J. Fernandes, 31; 8th Artur Quintal, 18; 9th Filipe Pires and Vítor Sá, 14; 11th Renato Pita, 10; 12th Cláudio Nóbrega, 9; 13th Filipe Silva and Pedro M. Gomes, 6; 15th Emanuel Martins and Gil Silva, 5; 17th Nuno Ferreira and Nuno Figueira, 4; 19th Ivo Sardinha, Sandro Teixeira, José Jarimba, Jerónimo Silva and João Passos, 3. 48 drivers have qualified.

Message from the Clerk of the Course for the 2024 RVM edition

Greetings RVM 2024 First weekend in August. Tradition dictates that Rali Vinho da Madeira shall be held, undoubtedly the biggest socio-sporting event in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is an event with a long track record, one of the brightest stars in the world of European rallies, as well as on the national and regional scene. Continuing to be a benchmark event, it is usually attended by drivers from different European countries, who are joined by drivers competing in both the Portuguese Rally Championship and the Madeira Coral Rally Championship, in a competition that usually attracts thousands and thousands of Madeirans to the roads of this marvellous island of Madeira. This year is once again a challenging one for the Organising Committee: despite keeping the same format as the last edition, we've introduced some changes to make the rally more compact and competitive - we're keeping the iconic Avenida do Mar show rally on Thursday evening, we're taking the ‘jump’ over the Madeira Stadium, the beautiful pass through Chão da Lagoa followed by the descent to Ribeiro Frio, making this the longest Special Stage at around 22 kilometres, passing the rearranged Carvalhal crossroads on the Ponta do Sol special Stage, with a climb to Paúl da Serra, and then, in connection, descending to Calheta, where an extremely technical Special stage will also be contested, with many points where spectators can access to watch. Our spectators have always been exemplary in their civic behaviour and tireless in their support for the drivers and the rally organisation, and it is, after all, for them that we also work, because if without drivers there are no rallies, without the public there is no show. Before the Avenida do Mar, on Thursday afternoon, there will be a presentation ceremony for the competitors at the podium in Praça do Povo. Over the next two days, they will travel around the four corners of the island, passing through all of Madeira's municipalities, guaranteeing a spectacle and a party, a party controlled by all the safety and health standards prescribed by the regional, national and international authorities. This year we will be reinforcing environmental sustainability standards, as advocated by the FPAK and FIA. As usual, I recommend that everyone watch the rally, close to the excitement but far away from the danger, and I ask the Madeirans to behave, as always, in an exemplary way to brighten up this event that is not just from Madeira, but is for Madeira. Happy Rali Vinho da Madeira 2024 Pedro Melvill de Araújo

Fighting for the top spots

Spanish driver Diego Ruiloba is coming to the Rali Vinho da Madeira for the second time behind the wheel of a Citroën C3 Rally2. The driver intends to ‘make the most of this incredible opportunity and I must thank everyone who has made this experience fantastic. I also want to fight for the first places in the rally. The local drivers are very fast and have perfect knowledge of the special stages. We also have the drivers from the Portuguese championship, who have a lot of experience on the island, and Campedelli, who was second in Rome yesterday in the European championship, won't make it easy. There are no special tactics for this race. It will be the same as every rally: work well on the reconnaissance and prepare a good set-up for the car.’ Ruiloba is 23 years old and made his debut in 2019 with a Peugeot 208 1.2. In 2021 he got behind the wheel of a Suzuki Swift and won the Spanish trophy for the model. The following year, driving a Peugeot 208 Rally4, he won the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica. Since then he has represented Citroën with a C3 Rally2. This year he won his first three overall victories, in the Sierra Morena, Lisboa and Rias Baixas rallies.
