In the 2026 edition of Rali da Madeira, an important safety innovation was implemented: Tyre Warm-up Zones (ZAP), a measure introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and applied this year by the Portuguese Federation of Automobile and Karting (FPAK). The goal of this new regulation is to eliminate potentially dangerous driving practices that some competitors carried out on roads open to traffic to raise the temperature of their tyres before the start of the Special Stages. With this change, drivers now have their own controlled space for this purpose, promoting greater competitive equality and, above all, reinforcing road safety.

According to the Clerk of the Course, Filipe Sousa, "this measure puts an end to situations where some competitors sought to warm up their tyres on open roads, while others strictly complied with the Traffic Code. From now on, this operation can only be carried out in areas specifically created for this purpose." Tyre Warm-up Zones (ZAPs) are located between the Time Control area and the start of each Special Stage. National regulations establish a minimum length of 500 meters. In Rali da Madeira, these areas will be between 800 meters and one-kilometre-long, providing adequate conditions for competitors to prepare their tyres before the start.

In addition to standardizing procedures, this measure also facilitates oversight by the authorities. Any attempt to warm up tyres outside these areas ceases to have regulatory justification, allowing for more effective action against possible infractions. The use of these zones is inspired by solutions already adopted in other disciplines of international motorsport. In Formula 1, for example, tyres are prepared using thermal blankets before the race. In rallies, where this solution is not feasible, Tyre Warm-up Zones constitute the regulatory alternative to ensure that tyres reach the ideal temperature before the competition.

Public attention is crucial. The Organising Committee also appeals to the cooperation of all spectators and residents in the areas covered by the Tyre Warm-Up Zone. Once the road is closed — which occurs with the passage of the safety vehicle Car 00, about 20 minutes before the first competitor — these areas become part of the event's safety system. During this period, parking vehicles on the road is not allowed, and it is essential to keep the entire area completely clear.

Residents and the public should also pay extra attention to the movement of children, pets, and other situations that may pose risks, as competitors perform manoeuvres in these sections to warm up their tyres. As with the Special Stages, it is also essential to watch the race only from safe locations in the Tyre Warm-Up Zones and respect all instructions from the organisation's staff and security forces.

Because Rali da Madeira is, above all, a celebration of motorsport, the organisation reminds everyone of the event's main safety message: be close to the excitement, but always far from danger.
